pro choice"The soul comes in with the breath and out with the breath. We the people make a women’s right to choose. This communication will make a women’s right to chose the law of the land in the name of freedom."

Exploring the Concept of Life and the Soul:

With Insights from Science and Spirituality

(especially regarding the ongoing antipathy between pro-choice and pro-life factions

and the unresolved question of when a human life begins)

In Genesis I 2:7, it is declared that "the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

The breath of life: The above Biblical passage explicitly encapsulates the profound belief that the soul enters the body when the baby takes its first breath -- implying that life begins at birth and not before; and that, therefore, to abort or not to abort should be at the sole discretion of the pregnant female. Scientific curiosity about this “soul moment” has led to observations of a purported 21-gram difference in body weight before and after death, which some speculate may represent the weight of the soul. Can this information be extrapolated to support the biblical Genesis view that the soul enters the body with the first breath -- at birth? This concept is worthy of consideration and challenges other positions as to when the first moment of life truly begins.

Heart beat: Contrary to the above belief, however, shamans of various current as well as ancient cultures have declared that the soul enters the body of the unborn when the heart of the fetus begins to beat, which usually occurs at the end of the 4th week but may be delayed until the 6th week of gestation. Question: Can something not be alive and yet have a heart that beats independently of its pregnant host?

Conception: Others believe that life begins at conception (when the male sperm successfully impregnates the female egg). There is much Biblical support for this position. Here are some Biblical references: [Isaiah 44:24 {I am} he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things. Isaiah 49:1 The LORD hath called me from the womb. Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee. Luke 1:15 and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. Luke 1:41 …when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.]

Life & Soul: A relevant question for consideration at this point: Are the terms “life” and “soul” interchangeable? If they are not, this complicates the overall issue at hand? Everything living obviously has life, but does everything alive have a soul? What is a ‘soul’? Later in Genesis I, Rachel died while giving birth to Benjamin. It states that her soul was departing as she died – which seems to indicate that the soul lives on after the life of the body is ended. Also, in Genesis I regarding God’s instructions to Noah and the coming flood, the animals are referred to as having the breath of life, but there is no mention of a soul. Yet, Job [12:10] said of the Lord: In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. [Peculiarly, even God himself, describes himself as a soul: Leviticus 26:11, 26:30; Jeremiah 5:29; 6:8; 9:9; 13:17; 32:41. Matt 12:18. There also is reference to a group soul: Numbers 21:4]

Pain: To further exacerbate the life/soul quandary, scientific research generally indicates that the fetus begins to feel pain around the 24th week of development; and , there are indications that it suffers great pain during the artificial procedure of abortion -- the dismemberment and removal of the fetus. Question: If the fetus can feel pain independently of its female host, is it alive?

Many people and groups advocate passionately for the rights of the unborn, viewing themselves as protectors of those unable to protect themselves. They offer counseling services, adoption services and other alternatives to abortion.

Soul! Life! Conception! Heart beat! Pain! – arghhh!  Why is life so complicated??? If we should err in our conclusions, should we err on the side of the healthy pregnant female who doesn’t want the responsibilities that come with giving birth to another human -- or on the side of the healthy unborn, who may or may not have a predetermined right to be born?

As we contemplate these cogent concepts and inescapable dilemmas, we encourage open discussion and respect for diverse views on when life begins (and when the “soul” occupies). Social media has provided an unprecedented platform for discussion and dissemination of ideas -- with current discussions showing heightened, and often very contentious and uncompromising positions between the pro-life and pro-choice advocates. After all, we’re talking about life/soul here, and the freedom of choice of the individual! From any vantage point, this is serious business!

This abortion topic has long been a favorite of those who want to destroy any potential for unity in order to manipulate the masses, because there yet appears to be no conclusion on the horizon that would come near satisfying both sides. The old sayings of, “united we stand, divided we fall” and “divide and conquer” are fully at play!

To add fuel to the fire, the US Supreme Court recently declared Roe v Wade unconstitutional at the federal level, thus referring the issue to the individual states for litigation. Also, we are entering a very important election season, that will most assuredly bring the abortion issue hotly to the forefront (now at both at the federal and the state level).

We, therefore, invite you to thoughtfully engage with us (and your governmental representatives) regarding this provocative subject -- to share it and all its implications widely -- and to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the perplexities of “life” and its elusive definition -- all the while, striving to preserve the determination of all sentient beings to maintain sovereignty over our own lives, while we promulgate reverent respect for the lives and opinions of others.

We the people have the power like never before as social media is uniting the world. Current estimates are putting pro-choice at a 60/40 ratio. This communication can help tip the scales in favor of pro-choice. Please send this out to your networks and make this go viral.
